If the tag line for Worse Than Poop! is "Who says CO2 pollution can't be funny?", then the tagline for the Oslo Principles might be "Who says climate change has to be depressing?". Last week saw Urgenda's successful court case in the Netherlands, based on the Oslo Principles, and watching the judge deliver his verdict I felt the same upwelling of hope I felt when Obama won the US presidency.
Climate Positions has this to say about the Oslo Principles:
“In short, the message is that ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions (GHG emissions) are unlawful unless they are consistent with a plan of steady reductions to ensure that the global surface temperature increase never exceeds pre-industrial temperatures by more than two degrees Celsius – in accordance with the recommendations of an overwhelming majority of leading climate scientists.”
Now there is legal precedent for demanding that our governments protect us from dangerous climate change. Who will be the first to bring a lawsuit like this to the US?
